NSW needs new Tourism Minister now, says opposition

NSW Tourism Minister Sandra Nori – one of Labor’s longest-serving female State MPs – will quit politics at the March 2007 election.

Her decision ends an 18-year political career and throws open the marginal seat of Port Jackson, renamed Balmain in the latest redistribution.

Ms Nori said she would continue in her roles as Minister for Women, Sport and Recreation and Tourism while helping ensure a Labor victory in March.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do, and projects that I’m committed to finishing,” she said.

But Opposition tourism spokeswoman Katrina Hodgkinson said a new minister with an ongoing commitment was needed straight away.

“Tourism is a huge economic driver of the state of NSW and the tens of thousands of New South Welshmen involved in the industry deserve better than for the premier to allow the current dire situation to continue,” Ms Hodgkinson said in a statement.

“Over the past five years, NSW has been sinking in the eyes of tourists, bottoming out in overnight stays, major events, domestic tourism and overall market freshness when compared with all the other Australian states.

“Minister Nori’s recently reported comments that `Sydney doesn’t need to chase events just to get a profile’ and that it can `afford to be selective’ shows just how lazy and disinterested this government is when it comes to tourism.”
