Operators extend Mexico flight suspension

Operators have decided to extend the suspension of flights to Mexico following FCO advice about the risks of catching swine flu.

Thomas Cook has decided to cancel holidays to Cancun up to and including May 22.

The operator is offering more holidays to the Dominican Republic and Egypt for people who want to switch to other locations.

Meanwhile, Thomson and First Choice Holidays have cancelled all outbound flights operating to Cancun and Cozumel up to and including May 18.

Parent company, TUI, said customer demand has switched from Mexico to other medium and long haul destinations, particularly Jamaica, Egypt and the Dominican Republic.

Jamaican tourist officials said they have seen a rise in UK visitors since the flu outbreak.

They said TUI flights from the UK to Mexico are being re-routed to Montego Bay, but a TUI spokeswoman would not confirm this.

Instead, she said: “As we operate a flexible business model, we are able to play with capacity at any time to suit demand.

“Our overseas operations team and purchasing contractors have been working extensively on securing alternative accommodation for those due to travel to Mexico, in resorts
where we already have agreements in place to ensure that all those set to travel experience a Thomson holiday in line with their expectations.”
