Orlando Sanford setting records

The Orlando Sanford International continues to set records, with passenger traffic up 66% in May, or up 109% year to date.

The airport, 25 miles or so from downtown Orlando, was the fastest growing in the world a few years ago.

It had only five destinations a year ago, but now has 31, including US cities, the Caribbean and Canada. Carriers include TransMeridian, Southeast, Jetsgo and Vacation Express.

“We’ve seen over 1.5 million passengers come through the airport in the past 12 months, the most over any 12-month period at the airport,” said Larry Dale, president of the airport authority.

The airport also handled 73,848 passengers from the United Kingdom.

The airport used to offer free parking. It’s still inexpensive at $5 a day.

Some of the air facilities growing use is due to its location, midway between Orlando’s tourist corridor and Daytona Beach. The facility is far less crowded than its busier counterpart, Orlando International Airport.
