OTAs halt sales of Venezuela flight tickets
Travel websites including Expedia and Orbitz have halted sales of flights to Venezuela as political turmoil deepens in the South American nation.
The US government updated its travel advisory to the highest ‘Do Not Travel’ level.
It advised Americans to ‘consider departing while commercial flights are available.’
Travel options have disappeared fast in recent years over currency restrictions placed on airlines, stopping them repatriating millions of dollars’ worth of revenue held in local currency.
The International Air Transport Association estimates Venezuela owes about $3.8 billion to several foreign airlines.
Several US, European and Latin American airlines have pulled out.
American Airlines’ daily Caracas – Miami flights are the only remaining services to the US.
Delta and United Airlines pulled out in 2017 amid deteriorating political tensions.
The situation is only likely to worsen after the US slapped sanctions on the Venezuela’s state-run oil company, making it harder for the few remaining airlines to source jet fuel.
