Tourists evacuated as ‘apocalyptic’ wildfires rage on Greek islands
Five people have been injured in wildfires sweeping the Greek islands of Chios and Kos.
Tourists were forced to evacuate hotels as wildfires raged across huge areas of the popular holiday islands.
Emergency services asked people to take shelter on beaches in the Metohi area of Chios.
In Chios, nearly 150 firefighters, seven planes dropping water and three helicopters were on site fighting the blazes.
Images showed tourists sleeping on fields after their Kos hotels were evacuated.
“It was like something from an apocalyptic film, I was looking round the football pitch, how we were all fenced in, the Greek army were there handing out water and blankets,” tourist Steve Fenwick told ITV’s Good Morning Britain.
About 2,000 tourists have been evacuated from the two islands.
