Over 300 businesses sign Fair Tax petition
More than 300 businesses have signed the latest online petition by the Fair Tax on Flying campaign launched three weeks ago.
The petition against rising Air Passenger Duty is open to both UK and international businesses.
It has already been signed by bosses at some of the world’s largest airlines, including Virgin Atlantic CEO Craig Kreeger, Will Ris, senior VP of American Airlines, Laurie Berryman, UK VP of Emirates, and Christian Schindler, director of Lufthansa.
John Bridge, CEO of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, who signed the petition, said: "Our members believe that future economic growth is dependent on competitively priced air travel for both passengers and goods.
"This facilitates international trade, encourages inward investment and attracts tourists. Having the world’s highest passenger tax is quite simply a threat to future economic growth."
Darren Caplan, chief executive of the Airport Operators Association, said: "We are delighted by the support businesses are showing for the campaign. Levels of APD are eye-wateringly high and choking the economy and local businesses – which are vital to the UK’s economic growth."
ABTA head of public affairs said the results were encouraging but even more support is required.
"We need even more support so we can demonstrate to the Treasury how damaging this tax is to UK businesses," he said.
"We’d encourage as many executives as possible to visit www.afairtaxonflying.org/business to make their voice heard."
