Packer to build world’s best hotel in Sydney
Casino operator Crown has announced plans to build super luxury hotel resorts in both Perth and Sydney.
Following the announcement that Crown will spend AUD568 million building a six-star hotel at its Perth casino, James Packer’s Crown Limited has secured approval to build a AUD1 billion hotel development in the Barangaroo precinct in Sydney.
"Sydney deserves one of the world’s great hotels on its magnificent harbour. My desire is for Crown to build the best hotel in the world at Barangaroo," Packer said.
Crown said it is currently considering options to incorporate a VIP only gaming facility at the Sydney hotel.
As a trade-off with the West Australian government, Crown will be able to expand its gambling facilities in Perth.
Construction of the 25-storey, 500-room Crown Towers Perth hotel will commence early next year and take three years to complete, according to a statement from Crown.
Convention facilities, restaurants and high-end retail will be part of the complex.
Crown will pay the West Australian government AUD62 million to acquire land for the hotel.
The hotel will be the third branded as Crown Towers – the other two are in Melbourne and Macau.
