Passengers taken to hospital after mid-flight fire
Ten people were taken to hospital after a mid-flight fire on a Spirit Airlines flight.
The Dallas to Orlando flight was diverted to Jacksonville after a battery caught fire in an overhead bin.
Crew and passengers helped to extinguish the fire but it emitted a lot of smoke which soon filled the cabin.
After landing several people were taken to hospital for evaluation.
One passenger – a former firefighter – helped put it out and suffered minor burns to his hands.
Other passengers were treated for non-serious smoke inhalation.
Emergency responders boarded the plane once it landed and determined the cause of the mid-flight fire was an overheated lithium battery.
