PEOPLExpress told to pay up or leave Va. Airport
Grounded low cost carrier PEOPLExpress has been given an ultimatum by Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
The airport says it is owed $100,000 in overdue airport fees and has told the airline to pay up or leave the terminal building.
Airport spokesman Ken Spirito says PEOPLExpress is still to pay passenger service fees for July, August and September.
The fledgling airline suspended all flights in late September after a critical shortage of flight crew and maintenance issues with its two aircraft, on loan from charter carrier Vision Airlines.
Spirito said the $4.50 fee per passenger due to the airport is included in the ticket price which is used by the Peninsula Airport Commission for capital improvements.
PEOPLExpress said last month it was close to securing another airplane but has yet to confirm if or when it will resume flying.
Spirito said the airport commission would consider reinstating PEOPLExpress if fees are paid in full, but he said he has received no assurances from the airline regarding payment or a resumption of service.
