Philadelphia expects over one million tourists and visitors in 2026

Philadelphia is gearing up for a landmark year in 2026, supporting the bold vision of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau and Visit Philadelphia  to position the city at the forefront of global tourism.

Speaking at the National Constitution Center during their joint 2026 Tourism Outlook event in early April, both organizations highlighted a convergence of major events, infrastructure upgrades, and sustainability initiatives set to define what could be the most important year in Philadelphia’s modern tourism history.

At the heart of this momentum is the FIFA World Cup 2026, with Philadelphia hosting six matches at Lincoln Financial Field, including a Round of 16 clash on July 4—coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The city will also host the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, alongside a year-long calendar of international celebrations tied to the U.S. Semiquincentennial, further boosting its global profile.

To maximize this opportunity, Visit Philadelphia has spent several years enhancing how visitors experience the destination. Initiatives include the launch of a centralized events platform, support for hundreds of local businesses through its Destination Optimization program, and partnerships with neighborhoods such as Germantown, Chinatown, and Africatown to create more authentic and diverse visitor experiences.

A key pillar of the city’s transformation is the “Gateways to Philadelphia” initiative, a $11.5 million environmental beautification program designed to enhance major entry points and corridors. The project includes large-scale landscaping, public art, lighting, and urban design improvements, with thousands of trees, shrubs, and plants already installed to create a greener and more welcoming urban environment.

Sustainability is a central theme of Philadelphia’s strategy. The city is promoting itself as one of North America’s most walkable destinations, encouraging visitors to explore on foot while reducing their environmental impact. Public transportation will also play a key role, with SEPTA rolling out enhanced services, including shuttle connections and bike valet solutions during major events.

Only U.S. host city to provide a continuous fan experience

Another highlight will be the FIFA Fan Festival, staged at Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park. Running for the full 39 days of the tournament from June 11 to July 19, Philadelphia will be the only U.S. host city to deliver a continuous fan experience. The free festival is expected to attract between 15,000 and 25,000 visitors on match days, with live screenings, concerts, and cultural programming creating a vibrant international atmosphere.

Tourism officials say the strategy is already paying off. According to Tourism Economics, Philadelphia is set for a strong rebound in 2026 following a dip in international arrivals in 2025.

Visitor numbers are forecast to grow, supported by rising demand from key global markets and the pull of major events. The FIFA World Cup is expected to draw around 500,000 international fans to the city, contributing to a projected total of more than one million visitors in 2026.

Hotel performance is also expected to improve, with occupancy and revenues on the rise, driven by higher average daily rates and increased group and leisure travel.

Looking ahead, the momentum continues beyond 2026. Philadelphia is preparing to host major sporting events including the Army-Navy Game in 2027 and is a finalist for the 2028 Democratic National Convention. The PHLCVB has already secured more than $1 billion in economic impact from events booked through 2030.
