Playa del Carmen ferry blast caused by bomb
Mexican officials confirmed an explosion which ripped through a passenger ferry in the tourist hotspot of Playa del Carmen last month was caused by a homemade bomb.
An investigation by the federal attorney general’s office and the Secretariat of the Navy said it was placed on the vessel and detonated remotely, newspaper El Universal reported.
Twenty-six people were injured by the bomb, which exploded when the ferry docked in Playa del Carmen.
It was initially thought that the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction.
However, several days later a second explosive device was found on the underside of another boat operated by the same ferry company, Barcos Caribe.
Investigator determined both were likely to have been made by the same person.
The Federal Police announced it will deploy dozens of officers at the ferry in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen and plans to install new security screening equipment.
