Police in Majorca arrest Brits over alleged bogus claim scam
Two British people have been arrested in Majorca by police investigating bogus claim scams.
The two have been accused of trying to encourage holidaymakers in Alcudia to say they have had stomach bugs.
A Civil Guard spokesman said: "They were capturing clients so they could allegedly make false claims from hotels they were staying in."
One person ahs formally been arrested on suspicion of fraud and the other is still being investigated.
Further arrests have not been ruled out, the police said.
The latest arrests follow warnings the bogus claim culture, which is widespread in Spain, is spreading to other hotspots, including Greece and Portugal.
Last month, the Foreign Office warned British holidaymakers in Portugal they face legal action if they submit false claims.
Two weeks ago, TravelMole reported, a British couple who said they had become ill while staying at a hotel on Crete in 2013, said they wanted to drop their claim after the hotel launched a counter-claim for damaging its reputation.
City of London Police are also believed to be studying several claims by tourists, which could result in criminal charges.
