Proposal to rename an airport after Oprah Winfrey
A Tennessee councilwoman has called on lawmakers to back a plan to rename Nashville International Airport in honour of Oprah Winfrey.
Sharon Hurt suggested the name change as Winfrey got her first break at a Nashville TV station before conquering the entertainment world.
However, the airport authority turned down the proposal as it did not meet the requirements for a name change.
The airport can only be named after an individual who has been dead for at least two years, airport CEO Doug Kreulen said.
Still, the Nashville Airport Authority Board can overturn the policy.
Hurt is busy trying to drum up support for the name change locally and in the media.
She proposed a new name of ‘The Oprah G. Winfrey International Airport.’
"Nashville is in a very unique position to be able to offer that type of recognition to someone that’s very deserving. I think it’s a grand opportunity for us to recognize someone of Oprah’s stature," Hurt said.
