Peter Shanks has been named as the new chairman of the Passenger Shipping Association.
The president and managing director of Cunard Line was previously PSA cruise section chairman but will be announced as the man in the top job on Friday at the association’s annual general meeting at the Chamber of Shipping in London.
He takes over from Lars Olsson of Stena Line who will be vice chairman.
Shanks, whose career incorporates stints at Airtours as managing director of distribution and at Thomas Cook as commercial director, joined Carnival in 2001 as senior vice president for Cunard Europe.
The PSA has appointed Shanks at what it sees as an important juncture in cruise – it predicts some 1.65 million Brits will take a cruise in 2010 while last year 40 million journeys were taken by ferry.
Said Shanks: “I am delighted to become the chairman at such an exciting time for cruise and ferry members. Both are introducing new, innovative ships and both offer such excellent value and service.
“The PSA represents 42 different cruise lines and 14 ferry companies and I look forward to building on the excellent work already undertaken in promoting travel by sea, which is an integral part of the UK economy and leisure industry.”
PSA Director William Gibbons said: “I would like to thank Lars for the work he has undertaken during the past two years, particularly his contribution to the debate on regulatory issues.”
