Qantas welcomes JAL to oneworld

Qantas today welcomed the news that Japan Airlines (JAL) would join the oneworld alliance in early 2007.

The Japanese carrier, one of the world’s largest, formally accepted an invitation in Paris today to join the alliance.

In Paris for a meeting of the oneworld Governing Board (oGB), the Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said JAL’s membership of the alliance would further confirm oneworld as the leading grouping of quality airlines.

“This is a natural evolution of the very strong bilateral relationship that Qantas has had with JAL for many years,” Mr Dixon said.

“It marks another important step in our ability to work together to develop the important travel market between Japan and Australia and to provide the customers of both airlines with wider choices, including frequent flyer benefits and reciprocal lounge access for premium passengers.

“JAL’s entry into the alliance will benefit all oneworld airline customers, individual member carriers and the alliance as a whole.”

JAL is the largest airline group yet to link to any of the global alliances. As well as Japan Airlines, five other members of the JAL group will also join oneworld as affiliates – J-Air, JAL Express, JALways, Japan Asia Airways, Japan Transocean Air.

Mr Dixon said Qantas was also looking forward to Malév and Royal Jordanian joining the alliance.

“With three new members coming on board over the next 12 months, oneworld’s network offering in a number of key and growth markets is going to expand significantly,” Mr Dixon said.

“This will benefit our customers and also deliver new revenue streams for all member airlines.”
