Regional airports to benefit as London runway expansion shelved

Tuesday, 27 May, 2010 0

Charter airlines may benefit in the long run from the scrapping of plans for new runways at Heathrow and Stansted.

The projection comes from the Baltic Air Charter Association which represents air charter brokers and others involved in the commercial aviation industry.

The 125-member organisation admits that the lack of runway space is likely to cause congestion and delays for both passengers and freight.

But BACA chairman Dick Gilbert said: “When that happens, using charter aircraft via the smaller regional airports will become an even more attractive option.

“Of course, this is good for the smaller airports and the local economy as well as for the charter market.”

Airports operator BAA dropped runway expansion plans for its two London area airports in the face of opposition from the new Lib-Con coalition government (see earlier TravelMole story).
