Robbers cut off ponytails at gunpoint to sell as hair extensions
Thieves in Venezuela are cutting off women’s ponytails in the street to sell on as £300 hair extensions.
Local news sources report that a gang known as the ‘piranhas’ in Maracaibo is targeting women with long, straight hair, stealing it at gun point and then selling it on.
Local hairdressers can charge clients up to £322 ($500) to weave real locks into their hair, according to CNN.
The mayor of Maracaibo, Eveling de Rosales, has addressed the issue reports the Daily Mail, saying that security is being upped and that ‘men and women were being placed to guard and avoid this happening again.’
