Robin Hood figures make Morton merry

Friday, 24 Jan, 2011 0

Despite ruinous snow conditions, last spring’s ash cloud and Easyjet’s decision to pull out of the Yorkshire hub, Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield airport has reported a 5% rise in passenger numbers for 2010.

Some 895,136 travellers used the airport compared to 851,355 in 2009.

Airport director Mike Morton said: “This is fantastic news, especially given the difficulties we faced in the travel industry in 2010. The severe weather conditions at the beginning and end of the year and the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland had a major impact on travel in and out of the UK. Despite this we saw more passengers taking off and landing in Doncaster.”

Morton added: “The easyJet operation was a big boost to our figures in the eight months it operated and we are delighted that with increased capacity and new routes from other operators, we are well on the way to replacing these services for 2011."

In April 2010 Easyjet introduced services to Amsterdam, Prague, Barcelona, Faro and Majorca but pulled out later in the year because flight times out of the airport were unattractive to clients. This is because the budget airline’s planes were not based at the airport.

But Morton was optimistic for this year, despite the set back.

He said:  “For 2011 Ryanair have introduced Tenerife and Faro to their offering, Wizz has announced their new route [to Vilnius], Holidays4U are doubling their capacity and Thomas Cook have increased their seats to 20,000 and introduced holidays to Bulgaria.”
