Rome airport scales back capacity following fire damage

EasyJet has decided to re-route passengers after Rome’s Fiumicino Airport announced plans to cut capacity to 60%.

The airport reduced its capacity from Saturday as a ‘precautionary measure’ after it was forced to close one of the security gates in terminal three, following a fire in May.

ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, said it will gradually shut down the arrivals hall at Terminal 3, and did not indicate how long the shutdown will last.

Airport chiefs said they made the decision based on concerns about passenger congestion and overcrowding.

Easyjet has told passengers that it is operating some pre-planned flights in and out of Rome Ciampino airport instead.

In a statement, it said: "easyJet, like other airlines, has some on-going cancellations to and from Rome Fiumicino airport following a fire which resulted in the closure of the airport on 7th May.

"Although the airport has now reopened, we expect it will take time for it to be fully operational and ENAC constantly reviews the reduction of service every airline has to carry out every day. As a result easyJet is currently not operating a full schedule of flights to and from Rome Fiumicino and some flights due to operate over the next few days will be re-routed through Rome Ciampino airport."

Departures for British Airways flights have been moved to terminal five, while passengers with Alitalia, Etihad and Emirates are being directed to terminal one for check-in and security.
