Royal approval for British Tourism Day
Windsors get out and about to help slow decline in visitor numbers
British Tourism Day has been given the royal seal of approval, with 10 members of the Windsor household doing their bit to encourage travellers to visit attractions in this country.
The Queen and Prince Philip will today visit Legoland, in Windsor, before hosting a reception at Buckingham Palace for tourist bosses. The Prince of Wales will visit Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Prince Andrew will take in the Lake District, and Prince Edward is to visit a Welsh riding centre.
As reported, the UK’s tourism business has taken a knock in recent years, with yet another announcement last week that April saw another decline in visitor numbers. The foot-and-mouth outbreak and the war in Iraq have been cited as factors that have made the situation worse.
A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: “This underlines the importance of tourism to the national economy. The wide variety of venues being visited shows how much the UK has to offer tourists both from home and abroad.”
