Searching for Projects to Support World Heritage
In the spring of 2009 Erin Burke embarked on a journey to Peru to visit Planeterra’s projects and to conduct a feasibility study for her International MBA research called Project to Enhance and Market Local Artisan Products from the Lares Valley.
Erin Burke is a 2010 IMBA candidate at York University’s Schulich School of Business in Toronto, Canada. Her work began with the following objective: Planeterra aims to increase its presence around UNESCO world heritage sites by developing sustainable projects that improve communities’ economic opportunities through tourism, without adversely affecting their culture or way of life. The Gap Adventures Lares Valley trek is situated near Machu Picchu, a world heritage site, and passes through a number of communities with few sources of income. Planeterra aims to identify a community to work with and a project to support, as well as a local organization to partner with to provide technical assistance.
Erin spent three months living in the Ccaccaccollo community in Peru’s Sacred Valley, working alongside Planeterra’s Project Manager, Danielle Weiss, who is based in Cuzco year-round. Upon completion of her internship and feasibility study, Erin wrote a story to share her experiences and reflections on her time in Peru with the women of the Ccaccoccollo weaving cooperative.
