Second Qantas plane makes emergency landing

Another Qantas jet has been forced to make an emergency landing after engine problems.

The Boeing 747-400 took off from Singapore’s Changi airport just hours ago but had to return a short time later after one of the engines exploded.

The news comes after Qantas grounded all its A380s yesterday after its London to Sydney service on the superjumbo was forced to land at Changi.  White vapour had started emerging from the engine close to the plane’s left wing.

A Qantas spokesman said the 747-400, flight QF6, which was carrying 400 passengers, had engine problems but landed safely.

He said: “Shortly after take-off the captain experienced an issue with one of its engines.”

Meanwhile a passenger told Reuters that the captain had told passengers to adopt the brace position after “ a loud bang” was heard in the cabin.

Just this morning Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said that an investigation was underway to discover what had gone wrong with the A380 but that it was likely to be a “material failure” or a design fault with the engine.

Qantas has never suffered a fatal crash in its 90 year history.
