Shark bite victim dies
A German tourist whose arm was bitten off by a shark off a Hawaii beach has died from her injuries.
Jana Lutteropp died in hospital on the island of Maui after being on life support since the 14 August attack.
The 20-year-old was snorkelling when the shark bit off her right arm. She was pulled from the water by a nearby swimmer.
She is the first person to die from a shark attack in Hawaii since 2004.
According to the Hawaiian authorities, there has been a surge in shark attacks this year – eight compared to the annual average of around four.
Earlier this week, a 16-year-old boy suffered leg injuries after a shark attack near Hilo on Hawaii island, the largest of the eight islands that make up the archipelago.
Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the waters along the Pohoiki coastline after the attack.
Hapuna Beach, on the island’s northwest shore, was also closed on Sunday after lifeguards spotted a shark.
On Tuesday, the US island state announced it was launching an $186,000 study of tiger shark movements, but said the attacks appeared to be random.
