A shootout at a downtown Los Angeles hotel has left one dead and at least three others with gunshot wounds.

A fracas reportedly started early Sunday morning over access to a birthday party taking place in the upscale Standard Hotel.

Shooting then took place in the lobby and continued in a nearby parking lot.

A 21-year-old male was pronounced dead while at least three others were taken to hospital.

Two were in a serious but stable condition while the third was thought to have been paralyzed.

Eye witnesses reported at least one more gunshot victim was driven away from the scene before emergency services arrived.

"We do not have any suspect description and there were no arrests," said LAPD’s Rosario Herrera, however a gun thought to be the weapon used was discovered several hours later in a parking lot.

The Standard Hotel is a well known LA celebrity hangout and has a sister property in West Hollywood.
