Sightseeing buses collide in Times Square
Two open-top tour buses collided in Times Square yesterday injuring at least 15 people.
The crash, which happened yesterday afternoon near 47th Street and 7th Avenue in New York, knocked over a traffic light and sent debris on to the pavement crowded with tourists and shoppers.
The police said a red Gray Line sightseeing bus sideswiped a blue CitySights NY bus and another vehicle on Seventh Avenue, a one-way southbound route, then mounted a curb onto the pavement at Duffy Square, reports the New York Times.
Three pedestrians sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries while a tour guide on the Gray Line bus was sent tumbling and was briefly trapped, with her head lodged beneath the dashboard.
Emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire trucks, were at the scene. One of the buses had its front section sheared off and one side smashed in.
David Chien, a spokesman for Twin America, the parent company of both bus lines, said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, and we are cooperating with the authorities."
