Singapore to get a taste of Spain
SINGAPORE – Spain has been creating a big food buzz of late with the news that El Bulli – rated by many as the world No 1 restaurant – will close for a two-year break.
Lovers of Spanish food in Singapore, however, can take heart that chef Santi Santamaria from Barcelona will be opening his new restaurant at Marina Bay Sands, alongside five other internationally recognised chefs.

Santamaria has an uncompromising style – both with his food and his opinions.

Of the current cuisine boom, he questions “whether all this gastronomic activity, all these impostor gourmets, are not ignoring the essence of foodâ€.
Simple is best, he says.
“A small number of products on the plate, if possible made in-house, with the least possible external handling.â€
When completed, Marina Bay Sands will feature convention and exhibition facilities, approximately 2,500 hotel rooms, the rooftop Sands SkyPark, a museum, gaming, the Paiza Club for premium players, theatres, entertainment, an outdoor event plaza, and shopping and dining.
Back to El Bulli where renowned chef Ferran Adria is to take a break.
“Ferran is bigger than El Bulli,†says French food author and critic Benedict Beauge. “He will still be very strongly involved in the industry – in terms of research and his different food businesses.â€
Two-Michelin-star Spanish chef Sergi Arola, a former disciple of Adria, speaking to the Business Times, said, “Ferran needs time for himself – it’s an intelligent decision.â€
El Bulli is due to shut in 2012 and 2013.
During his break, Adria has promised to finish what he started with Hacienda Benazuza in Seville and “take hotel catering to a magical levelâ€.
