Six tourists dead after Red Sea submarine accident
A tourist submarine has sunk near Hurghada, Egypt, killing six people.
The submersible, operated by Sindbad Submarines was carrying 45 tourists and crew, authorities said.
The local government office said crews rescued 39 people, with nine of them suffering injuries.
The tourists were mostly Russian citizens, the Russian consulate said.
It also said those injured are not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.
The Red Sea governor, Amr Hanafy, said there were also citizens of India, Norway and Sweden onboard.
He did confirm the six who died were all Russian.
Hurghada is a major tourist destination noted for its Red Sea coral reefs and islands.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The Association of Tour Operators of Russia said in a post the submarine hit a reef and decompressed, at about 20 metres below the surface.
The Sindbad Submarines vessel ran underwater trips to the coral reefs off the Hurghada coast.
