Solution for Comair/Delta Christmas snafu ?
Comair says its computer glitch that stranded thousands of passengers over Christmas was caused by an old system that is being replaced.
The Delta Air Lines subsidiary said it expects to switch to a new system in the next three months. The old system was more than a decade old.
But its failure to likely to focus attention on whether financially ailing airlines are spending enough on technology, noted USA Today.
Airlines were expected to devote less revenue from technology this year than in the past. Instead of the 2.8% of revenues going to technology in 2001, the airlines will spend about 2.1%, said Airline Business magazine.
Other airlines have had computer problems in the past, but not as extreme as Comair. Air Canada’s computerized reservation system, for example, went down for 45 minutes earlier this year, creasing numerous flight delays.
Comair has since returned to a normal schedule, the airline says. But the Transportation Department, and perhaps the US Congress, is investigating last weekend’s problems of both Comair and US Airways.
