South African tourism petition urgently seeks red list removal

Saturday, 06 Sep, 2021 0

The South African tourism industry has united to apply pressure on the UK to remove South Africa from the travel ‘red list’.

It is calling on British citizens to support action via a petition to PM Boris Johnson to get tourism flowing between the two countries again.

The petition has support from inbound tourism group Southern Africa Tourism Services Association and travel agents association ASATA among others.

“Red list travel restrictions to southern Africa are unfair and are inflicting real social, environmental and economic hardship on families, businesses and ecosystems with no scientific justification given,” the petition says.

“The government should urgently review its travel policy towards South Africa to ensure it is fully aligned with the latest scientific evidence.”

It has so far gained more than 30,000 signatures.

At least 100,000 is required to trigger a parliamentary debate on the issue.
