South Korea hopes to launch international travel bubbles from next month
South Korea is pushing to open two-way travel bubbles this summer with several countries including Singapore and Thailand.
It will exempt international tour group visitors from mandatory quarantine from countries ‘that have secured mutual trust on their capacity to prevent and control COVID-19,’ South Korea’s transport and tourism ministries said.
It also wants to arrange travel bubbles with US territories in Guam and Saipan, which are popular holiday spots for Koreans.
"This initiative is expected to trigger the resumption of international tourist flows in the transition period before forming herd immunity in connection with the rising vaccination rate in Korea," a statement from the ministries said.
South Korean Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said it could begin ‘as early as July’ fo vaccinated tour groups.
About 18% of South Koreans have received a fist Covid vaccine dose and about 5% are fully vaccinated.
