Southwest Airlines launching five new routes
Southwest Airlines has revealed five new non-stop routes beginning in August.
It aims to fill in network gaps connecting major cities but the carrier will see serious competition on some routes.
This is the case as Southwest launches five midweek daily flights linking Atlanta and Nashville and three flights a day at weekends from August 7.
It comes up against Delta Air Lines which flies to Nashville from its main hub 11 times a day.
"Southwest Airlines’ decision to add nonstop service to Atlanta out of Nashville International Airport will be welcomed by travelers to and from Nashville, particularly within the business community," said Doug Kreulen, CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.
"This new route brings competition to that market and provides additional options for our passengers."
On the same day Southwest begins flying once a day on four other routes, namely from Los Angeles to Tampa, Kansas City-Raleigh/Durham, Hartford, Conn. to St. Louis, and Cincinnati to Denver.
On the latter, Southwest comes up against Allegiant, Delta Air Lines, Frontier and United Airlines which all serve the route.
