Southwest punks United fare hike
After first declining to match a $10 fare hike by United, which resulted in the airline stating that it was rolling back its increase, Southwest went ahead and put increases into place on Friday. The hikes are significant: $2 each way for trips under 501 miles, $3 each way for 501 to 1,000 miles, and $5 each way for longer trips.
AP first reported that United had rolled back the increase, but latest reports say that the major carriers will now follow Southwest and raise fares accordingly—presumably that also includes United.
