Friday, 17 Apr, 2026 0

Slovenia is a paradise for cyclists of all kinds. Slovenia’s appeal lies in its diversity. From road cycling to mountain biking, from challenging ascents to family-friendly paths, the country caters to all levels. Its well-maintained network of routes makes it easy to explore varied terrain, from alpine peaks to coastal landscapes.

The world knows Tadej Pogačar, as he has been at the top of world cycling for several years. The young Slovenian made cycling history with four overall victories at the Tour de France (2020, 2021, 2024, 2025) and an additional overall victory at the Giro d’Italia (2024). Pogačar is also the youngest four-time Tour winner in history.

Pogačar also won an Olympic bronze medal and is the current two-time world road race champion (2024, 2025). The year 2025 was another record year for Pogačar: he won his first European road cycling championship title, became the first cyclist in history to win the Giro di Lombardia five times in a row. At the age of 25, he reached a historic milestone in the UCI World Ranking, becoming the first cyclist to pass the 10,000-point mark.

With its expertise of world-class cyclist, the Slovenian champion recommends five cycling experiences in Slovenia that are well worth a try.

Cycling routes with stunning views of the Julian Alps

Slovenia offers a rich variety of cycling experiences, with the Julian Alps standing out as a top destination. The Juliana Bike, a 290-kilometre circular route divided into 10 stages, showcases some of the country’s most spectacular alpine scenery. It winds through the forests of Triglav National Park and beneath Slovenia’s highest peaks. For those seeking a more relaxed pace, shorter day trips or multi-day rides are available, with the option to combine cycling and rail travel along the scenic Bohinj railway.

Ride through vineyards and culinary landscapes

Cyclists who enjoy combining sport with gastronomy will find Goriška Brda particularly appealing. This picturesque region, bridging the Alps and the Mediterranean, offers over 280 kilometres of cycling routes through rolling hills, vineyards, and charming villages. Known for hosting cross-border stages of the Giro d’Italia, it’s a favorite among enthusiasts. The area is ideal year-round, with opportunities to stop at wine cellars and local farms for tastings, meals, and even overnight stays.

Mountain adventures near Ljubljana

Just 30 minutes from Ljubljana, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps provide easy access to dramatic mountain landscapes. Velika Planina is a highlight, known for its traditional shepherd huts and challenging climbs. It gained international attention during the 2022 Tour of Slovenia. For less demanding rides, the nearby Kamniška Bistrica valley offers a gentle route suitable for families and beginners.

Nature and relaxation in Pohorje

In northeastern Slovenia, the Pohorje plateau near Maribor is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by dense forests, it offers numerous routes for both road and mountain cyclists. The area encourages riders to pause and enjoy its natural beauty, regional cuisine, and nearby thermal spas—perfect for recovery after a long ride.

Iconic climbs: Vršič and Mangart Saddle

For experienced cyclists, Slovenia’s ultimate challenges are the climbs to Vršič Pass and Mangart Saddle. These iconic routes reward effort with breathtaking views of the Julian Alps. Tackling these ascents is considered a must for anyone serious about cycling in Slovenia, combining physical challenge with unforgettable scenery.

For travelers and professionals of the travel industry keen to learn more about the champion, Tadej Pogačar returns as a guest in the latest episode of Feel Slovenia, the Podcast, offering a rare and personal insight into his life, career, and connection to his home country.
