Spring has sprung, so where’s the best skiing this week?

Saturday, 15 Feb, 2019 0

Spring has arrived early in the Alps, with warmer weather and clear skies, while North America is expecting more heavy snowfall. Here’s the latest country-by-country round-up from the Ski Club.

AUSTRIA
Salzburgerland, Saalbach got the most of the snow that fell in Austria earlier this week, enjoying an 80cm dump. Unfortunately, that raised the avalanche risk to a level three, so of-piste skiers need to take care. In the Tirol, there has been some lighter snowfall this week, while Mayrhofen has had up to 20cms. No further significant snowfall is expected.

FRANCE
There was moderate to heavy snowfall across the Savoie, Haute Savoie, with smaller amounts falling in the Haute Alps earlier this week, resulting in fantastic skiing conditions. Now that the avalanche risk has been reduced, a far wider terrain is open.

SWITZERLAND
There’s no fresh snow forecast for Switzerland in the coming days, but with most terrain already well-covered, rising temperatures and clear skies, conditions are looking pretty perfect for skiers and boarders all round.

ITALY
Major resorts including Cervinia, Courmayeur, La Thuile and Pila got 10 to 25cm of fresh snow earlier this week. More limited skiing is available in Sestriere and Sauze D’Oux, where the coverage is patchy. No more snow is forecast for the region in the next few days. Over in the Dolomites, the slopes are relatively uncrowded and well-groomed.

ANDORRA
Arinsal and Grandvalira both have a good base. In Grandvalira there is an avalanche risk level 2, but Arinsal has a higher level 3 risk.

EASTERN EUROPE
Resorts across Bulgaria continue to enjoy great skiing, with fantastic coverage Skiers should expect colder conditions than in the Alps, sitting closer to -10C than freezing.

USA
There’s been more heavy snowfall in California and Nevada, with Squaw/Heavenly getting 152cm in a week. The northern resorts of Jackson Hole and Big Sky have also received impressive dumps. Of the two more southerly Rocky Mountain states, Utah continues to enjoy superior conditions, especially in Snowbird, Snowbasin, Alta, Solitude and Park City. Resorts across New England were expecting up to 30cms of snow later this week.
