Sri Lanka announces lockdown

Sri Lanka has imposed a 10-day lockdown in an effort to contain surging Covid infections. Last week it recorded the highest single-day death toll of 187 and 3,793 cases as it threatens to overwhelm the health system.
The lockdown will last until 30 August. Daily infections have more than doubled in the past month. Authorities had already imposed certain restrictions such as closure of schools, gyms, and banning events, as well as an overnight curfew.
