‘Suppliers too eager to ditch the agency distribution model’
A snap poll of travel agents has revealed that three quarters of agents feel threatened by airlines and agents that sell direct via the internet.
The poll, carried out by Amadeus found that 73% of the agents and industry professionals surveyed were “either concerned or very concerned about the effect that airline and operator direct sales via the internet will have on their business”.
Agents were divided over the issue of introducing fees following commission cutting by airlines. While 70% said they were concerned or very concerned by the trend of commission cutting, only 27% said they were concerned about charging fees.
Amadeus UK senior marketing communications executive, Rob Golledge said: “One of the more positive comments expressed is that now more than ever, travel agents are working for their customers rather than acting as agents for any airline or operator.
“This is good news for the customer when it comes to receiving independent advice. But it’s bad news for suppliers who are too eager to ditch the agency distribution model – considering the volume of sales that is still being generated through travel agents.”
The poll was sent to about 300 Amadeus customers who subscribe to a newsletter sent out by the GDS.
