Surfing tourism on the up
ABC reports that Tasmania has been warned to keep its beaches clean and accessible to capitalise on the new wave of surf tourism.
The Australian Surfrider Foundation’s meeting in Hobart this weekend, encouraging beach users to help the state maintain its status as one of the top surfing locations in the world.
The foundation’s Chris Tola says access to the coast and the water itself varies from beach to beach and state to state.
He says Tasmania’s coastline is unique and worth sustaining.
“There’s a lot of poor examples around the globe, the Mentawais, Indonesia, Bali, where unfortunately surfing industry hasn’t been as best as it could be,” Mr Tola said.
“But I think you’ve got an opportunity here in Tasmania to ensure that surf tourism is done and done well,” he said.
