Sydney baggage handlers strike over but delays continue
While Qantas’ international baggage handlers at Sydney Airport have returned to work after a stop-work meeting over safety concerns, the airline says its international flights are continuing to be delayed by about two hours.
Sydney Airport says other international flights are also being affected, and is advising passengers to check with their airline.
Scott Connolly from the Transport Workers Union says Qantas’ baggage handling operations are critically understaffed and that there are serious safety issues, with a 50% increase in back injuries in the past six to eight months and a reduction of staffing numbers of some 30% to 40% over the last year. He says that these issues have been raised time and again with management and Qantas says it is meeting with the union over concerns.
