Iconic Sydney Bondi Beach evacuated following act of terrorism
Multiple people have been killed and at least two police officers injured in a shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The information was communicated by sources within New South Wales Police who spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
Police confirmed that two people have been arrested and said the operation remained ongoing late Sunday, describing later in the evening the situation as a “terrorist act”. In a statement posted to social media, authorities urged the public to avoid the area and seek immediate shelter.
“Anyone at the scene should take shelter. Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand,” NSW Police said, adding that people should remain in place until officers could determine what was happening.
While reports of multiple casualties have emerged, authorities confirmed to the ABC that 12 people have died in this evening’s shooting at Bondi Beach, including one of the shooters and 11 victims. Twelve people were also injured, including multiple police officers responding to the incident. The number of victims could further change.
Emergency services have mounted a large-scale response, deploying more than 25 resources, including ambulances, medical teams, helicopters, and special operations units. NSW Ambulance said multiple patients were treated at the scene, with six transported to surrounding hospitals.
Australia’s most iconic beach under fire
Video and images from Sydney beach showed a chaotic and distressing scene, with injured people lying on the grass as paramedics rushed to provide care. Witnesses described crowds fleeing the area, some with head bandages, others covered in blood.
The shooting occurred near the Bondi Pavilion, where a “Chanukah by the Sea” event had been scheduled to take place near a children’s playground and had already begun.
NSW Premier Chris Minns called the reports and images from Bondi “deeply distressing” and urged the public to follow official advice. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” saying police and emergency responders were working to save lives and that his thoughts were with those affected.
The Waverley Local Government Area is home to Australia’s most famous beach. Bondi is indeed a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Sydney. The iconic beach holds the distinction of being the most widely shared and photographed Australian beach on social media. In 2022, Bondi attracted over 880,000 domestic overnight visitors, with 52% visiting the beach
