Thai hotels to come under food safety audit

A UK firm is to tackle “poor” food safety standards in Thailand.

Check Safety First has signed a strategic partnership with SGS, claimed to be the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, to audit food safety standards in hotels across the country.

The arrangement gives SGS exclusive rights to distribute Check Safety First’s E-Cristal risk management system across hotels in Thailand.

As part of the agreement Check Safety First is training SGS staff members on the implementation of the E-Cristal programme and food hygiene.

“Despite Thailand’s booming tourism market, its reputation for food safety is poor and it was recently rated in a survey by a British insurance company as the country where guests are most likely to contract food poisoning,” Check Safety First said.

The company’s CEO Mark Harrington said: “We see our expansion into Thailand as the perfect opportunity for hoteliers to improve health and safety standards for tourists and to stand out from competitors.

“We’re a rapidly expanding company with sites across the world and it makes sense to join forces with a body with a reputation and global reach as strong as SGS’.”

Hathairat Sirikupphokakorn, global account manager for SGS, said: “We have the expertise and contacts to make this venture work.

“Support from Check Safety First’s E-Cristal programme, which has already been proven in hotels across the globe, will ensure that this strategic partnership will be successful.”
