Thailand eases alcohol rules to boost tourism

Sunday, 07 Dec, 2025 0

Thailand has relented and temporarily eased the ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol during the afternoon.

It is a victory for tourism leaders who warned it would impact tourism revenues.

Restaurants and other outlets will now be able to sell beer, wine and liquor between 2pm to 5pm for a six-month trial period.

It mostly affected tourists drinking during lunch at restaurants or buying alcohol at bottle shops in the afternoon.

The afternoon ban on alcohol at certain venues like restaurants dates back more than 50 years.

Venues who violated the law were liable for fines of up to THB10,000.

Authorities will look again at the law and solicit feedback after the six-month period and decide whether it should be permanently scrapped or not.
