Thailand’s tourism reopening timeline in doubt
Thailand may have to revise its planned reopening timeline due to the biggest increase in Covid cases since the start of the pandemic and dwindling vaccine supplies.
The country has tightened rules by extending the closure of bars and karaoke lounges in Bangkok and elsewhere and has put the capital and several other provinces under ‘maximum control.’
It banned large gatherings and has reached out to vaccine makers for more supplies. The Thai government still expects to reopen tourism gradually starting with Phuket this summer under a ”sandbox’ scheme, but concedes to may have to be revised.
Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said officials are ‘concerned about the reopening timeline’ and the inadequate vaccine supply situation.
