The Ghan increases services

Great Southern Railway announced today that The Legendary Ghan will be doubling its service to Darwin next year from 17 March 2006. The Ghan will operate twice weekly return services from Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Springs. Tickets for The Ghan’s additional service go on sale today.

The additional service will depart Adelaide via Alice Springs every Friday and will return from Darwin every Monday.

Great Southern Railway Chief Executive Officer, Mr Tony Braxton-Smith said, “We knew a journey on The Ghan across the continent from Adelaide to Darwin would have some appeal, but we’ve been amazed by the market response to date. There was strong demand earlier this year when we doubled The Ghan’s service through the peak season of May, June and July, and that has given us the confidence to offer the second service year round.”

“Some people have found it difficult to get tickets. Well, now we can say with confidence, space is now available, but as always it pays to book early. The Ghan gives our guests the opportunity to cross Australia in a unique fashion on a great railway icon,” Mr Braxton-Smith added.

The transcontinental journey from Adelaide to Darwin covers 2,979 kms, and in either direction, guests have 2 nights aboard The Ghan. On board, guests will marvel at the spectacular Australian landscapes; from the red-hued vistas of the MacDonnell Ranges surrounding a town called Alice, gateway to Ayers Rock and the Red Centre, and on to the magnificent gorges of Katherine and the tropical splendor of the Top End.
