The Mole lets Santorini speak for itself!

I knew that Santorini was a magical place with many having told me that I would love it, but I was not prepared for exactly how magical it was, with this world famous island, the southern most island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea, 63 nautical miles north of Crete, with sparking white houses perched on cliff tops and practically not a tree to be seen.

Watch this special report on TravelMole TV to discover the real magic of Santorini:

Santorini is only 73 sq. km and is made up of thirteen villages with about thirteen thousand permanent inhabitants, so a tiny little island with a massive reputation and if there is anything going against Santorini it is that so many people want to visit and also the massive cruise ships that call there disgorging thousands of people, often more than the narrow streets can cope with.

Having said that there are days and times of the year, when there are no ships and locations where the cruise passengers do no go – so the tip is get off the beaten track in Santorini and Greece and Mediterranean Travel are the people to help you do so.

Poets have written about Santorini and artists have attempted to capture its beauty, but quite simply, nothing can quite describe the magic of Santorini.

The centre of Santorini is without doubt the flooded caldera, which was reportedly formed by massive volcanic explosion around 1500 BC, leaving Santorini clinging to the rim of the caldera, with rocky steep terrain on the caldera side, with volcanic rock, pumice stone, unusual rock formations, with the other said having areas have a gentler terrain.

There are even cave houses, dug into the volcanic rock, but archetypal Santorini is also all about narrow cobbled streets and winding paths with domed churches, with blue domes everywhere you look, with even most houses having a dome somewhere!

[Pictured: a sleeping donkey which along with dozesn of others, carries tourists to the top of the cliff as an alternative to the cable car sums up sleepy Santorini!]

So, how do you get there?

Well, the best thing to do is to consult the specialists at Greece and Mediterranean Travel at www.greecemedtravel.com as you can get there as we did on a cruise ship, but only for a short stop, but if you want to stay longer GMTC have packages on the island and you can also island hop.

You can also travel to Santorini by boat from Piraeus all year round also of parts of the year from Crete and there are direct flights from Athens all year round.
