‘Third largest’ waterfall discovered in Peru
What has been claimed as the world’s third largest waterfall has been discovered in a remote region of Peru.
The 2,529ft Gocta fall is near the northern city of Chachapoyas and can only be reached by a five-hour trek on a dirt road from the nearest village.
It was found by a German working on a project for a water company.
The country’s tourism promotion organisation – the Commission for the Promotion of Peru – plans to make the waterfall accessible to tourists next year, including improvements to accessible roads and developing accommodation and restaurants in nearby villages.
A statement said: “In addition to the infrastructure improvements in the area, the project will also create programmes to raise awareness and educate local villagers about the importance of conserving the natural environment.”
