Thousands of passengers depart Schiphol a day late

Wednesday, 30 Apr, 2018 0

Six thousands passengers whose flights out of Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport were cancelled yesterday because of a major power outage are leaving today.

The airport had already expected today to be busy because it is the start of Holland’s May vacation and the end of the country’s long King’s Day weekend.

Yesterday around 60 flights were cancelled and many were delayed when the power outage affected Schiphol’s check-in system, leading to a build up of queues and the decision to temporarily close the airport.

The exact cause of the problem is unknown, but it happened after a large power outage in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, according to reports.

Schiphol has advised passengers due to fly today to check its website and with their airline for updated information.

It has also asked travellers to check in online.

Schiphol advised passengers: "Due to a major power outage in Amsterdam yesterday flights may be delayed or cancelled."

In addition, strike action by transport workers today and tomorrow, Tuesday May 1, means there are no regional buses to and from the airport.
