Top 10 ethical tourism destinations announced
Ethical Traveler releases its top 10 for 2017
Belize, Cape Verde, Chile, Costa Rica Dominica, Mongolia, Palau, Tonga, Uruguay, Vanuatu make it as top ethical destinations.
Every year Ethical Traveller surveys the world’s developing nations—from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. It focuses on three general categories: environmental protection, social welfare and human rights. Since 2013, animal welfare was added.
In this first phase of the process, country scores from a variety of databases are considered related to the three categories, using information from sources like Freedom House, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Reporters Without Borders, UNICEF, the World Bank and LGBT resources.
After identifying about 25 "short list" performers, Ethical Traveller turns to detailed case study research, focusing on actions these governments have taken over the past year to improve (or, in some cases, weaken) policies and practices in their countries.
Many strategies are used to finalize the list—including engagement with civic leaders, discussions with travelers and reviews of local English-language media.
For a country to make the list, of course, it must excel in more than metrics. Each Ethical Destination also offers unspoiled natural beauty, great outdoor activities and the opportunity to interact with local people and cultures in a meaningful, mutually enriching way.
