Tour de France pays tribute to WWI victims
This year’s Tour de France will pay its respects to those who fought and died in the First World War.
Several tour stages will include places where key battles took place.
During the sixth stage between Arras and Reims, the pack will ride along the Chemin des Dames, where key battles took place in spring 1917.
On July 10, the riders will pass by fields of cornflowers. Support staff and caravan personnel will wear a cornflower, the symbol of remembrance of the soldiers who fought on the Chemin des Dames.
The First World War will also be marked on June 22, several days before the anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the event that triggered the conflict.
A pack of 5,000 cyclists from Bosnia-Herzegovina will come together in Sarajevo to ride alongside several former Tour de France champions.
The 140 professional riders in attendance will then race on a 120km route through 14 towns in Bosnia-Herzegovina
