Tour guide’s racist rant prompts apology from tour bus firm
A racist, expletive-filled rant by a tour guide against San Francisco’s Chinatown has prompted a tour firm to issue a public apology.
The San Francisco bus tour guide, working her last day in the job, was filmed denigrating the district and its Chinese residents with a F-bomb littered outburst which was then posted on YouTube.
By early Friday it had garnered almost 500,000 views.
"On behalf of City Sightseeing San Francisco, I deeply apologize to the residents of Chinatown and San Francisco for the conduct of a former employee," said City Sightseeing CEO Christian Watts.
"Due to this unfortunate incident, we have added additional training processes to ensure that each tour is up to our rigorous standard."
Both San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor David Chiu have condemned the rant and Chui has demanded an apology from the ex-tour guide calling her remarks ‘offensive, racist and hurtful.’
Darin Ow-Wing, director of education at the Chinese Culture Foundation of San Francisco said the guide was ‘just spouting hatred’ and has called on the tour industry to up standards and ensure tour guides have a better understanding of the communities they are working in.
