Tourism sector calls on junta for help
The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) is urging some short-term measures to prop up the industry.
“Apart from lifting night-time curfews in tourist areas, the military government still needs to solve many other problems," said TCT.
It said the junta should launch a hotel-discount campaign "to boost domestic travel" and fund retired people to travel.
TCT is also calling for a crackdown on illegal businesses such as [unlicensed] taxis in Phuket, and Chinese-language tourist guides who are reportedly damaging local guides’ [business], The Nation reported.
The tourism council has revised down the number of arrivals due to the continuing political tension in Thailand. It has been estimated that 1.2 million tourists could skip travelling to the kingdom over the next few months due to security fears.
This is expected to have a significant impact on the annual two-month shopping festival, scheduled to take place nationwide from June 13 to August 15.
